Magic isn't real, is it? Well, it can depend on how you look at it...
Arthur C. Clarke (2001 Space Odyssey) - "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic".
If you could somehow demonstrate a smartphone to someone living in the year 200 AD, it might seem to them to be a form of incredible magic.
We can maybe make a distinction between "scientific" and "traditional" magic.
Traditional magic is things like magic wands and jewellery. You can find out more about this here.
Scientific magic can take a few forms. Consider the following concepts, which at first glance seem "magical" - a "Fire Sword", an "Ice Sword", a "Lightning Sword" and a "Poison Sword".
In actual fact, these can all be done using "conventional" means. N.B. this is purely for educational purposes, do not try this at home. For a Fire Sword, putting some kind of pitch on the blade and setting fire to it will work. For an Ice Sword, cooling down the blade by putting it at the bottom of a pond, or in a freezer. For a Lightning Sword, magnetizing the steel of the blade. In all of these cases, the handle must be well insulated.
For a Poison Sword, well you get the idea...
